KAPOK AKA SILK COTTON

129 Views 0 Liked

The silk cotton tree (Ceiba pentandra), also known as the kapok tree, is a massive, fast-growing tropical tree native to Central and South America, Africa, and Southeast Asia. It is renowned for its towering height, often reaching up to 60-70 meters, and its distinctive buttressed trunk, which provides stability. The tree's smooth, grayish bark is often studded with conical spines. It features compound leaves with multiple lance-shaped leaflets and produces large, showy white or pale pink flowers that are pollinated by bats.

The tree's seed pods contain fluffy, lightweight fibers called kapok, traditionally used for stuffing mattresses, pillows, and life jackets due to their buoyancy and water resistance. Besides its economic significance, the silk cotton tree holds cultural and spiritual importance in many regions, often considered sacred and a symbol of resilience and connection to nature.
